UDICO Holdings: our technology
A New Paradigm for Search
What is the problem impetus that creates the necessity to develop a new paradigm for the intelligent storage, management and retrieval of documents? When one of Udico's partners, Seymour Rubinstein, was originally developing an efficient collection of methods to create and edit documents, he realized early on that the easier the process became, the greater the volume of documents that would come into existence. Nevertheless, some 27 years after Mr. Rubinstein’s WordStar appeared in the marketplace, the basic storage and retrieval methods have remained essentially the same.
As the Internet has continued to develop into a vast and growing storehouse of documents, retrieval applications (commonly and generically known as "search engines") have come to the forefront, purporting to solve the problem of document retrieval. But, when anything more than a casual investigation is needed, this "advanced" method becomes tedious to the point of disillusionment.
It should be noted that an entire industry, complete with multi-billion dollar companies, has grown up to service the average researcher. The principal revenue model derived from the average researcher is targeted advertising. Indeed, just as the media interests of the public are subsidized by revenue from advertisers, information services on the Internet have found a way to exist and prosper.
Original Inspiration and Recognized Advancement. - On a consulting assignment in 1992 for the company Mr. Rubinstein founded, MicroPro International Corporation, he came across a company in Texas that was developing automated document abstraction techniques. In the process of this development, they were creating semantic and lexicon-based methods to extract concepts from any single document which then could be used to form synoptic sentences that summarized the source document. Observing their development inspired his idea of using an organized concept index keyed to an arbitrary set of documents as a method to navigate the contents of the document set in a way that was meaningful to a researcher in any alphabet-based language worldwide instantaneously.
Targeted Advertising – Methods for targeted advertising are inherent in the claims contained in the patents. Although there are other technologies in use today, they probably infringe on various portions of this patent portfolio. However, the UDICO-implemented version of targeted advertising, from its initial development up to today, is based upon its patents and developed technology, as it has certain desirable features which set it apart from the others as follows:
- Prompted assistance in choosing click targets – An advertiser is encouraged to perform searches in his/her areas of interest. Then, using the facilities provided, the advertiser chooses words and index entries in accordance with the findings, and edits the chosen list of targets with ad copy and a destination URL.
- Immediate implementation – the technology can facilitate an advertiser’s wish once they have chosen the targets and completed the easy editing and bidding process, because implementation is immediate. In contrast, a leading search engine company takes up to 48 hours for implementation as a consequence of their design.
